Apple to Launch Standalone 'Passwords' App in iOS 18 and macOS 15

Apple plans to launch a new Passwords app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This app will serve as an alternative to third-party options like 1Password and LastPass, offering iPhone, iPad, and Mac users an easier way to access their stored login information.

Apple’s operating systems already include a Passwords feature, but it’s buried in the Settings app and can be hard to find for those unfamiliar with it. Apple has been steadily adding new password features, such as storing logins, supporting one-time codes, and generating passwords directly in Safari.

The upcoming standalone Passwords app will be based on iCloud Keychain, which syncs login and password details across Apple devices. It will offer all the current Passwords features from Settings and will also be compatible with Vision Pro and Windows PCs.

The app will store logins and passwords for websites, Wi-Fi networks, and Passkeys, which use Face ID or Touch ID for logging in instead of a password. Data from the app can be auto-filled into websites and apps when logging in.

Apple aims to promote stronger, unique passwords with the Passwords app, competing with established third-party services like 1Password. Users will be able to import passwords from other services.

Apple plans to unveil the Passwords app at next Monday’s WWDC keynote event.
