According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple intends to leverage data centers equipped with Apple silicon chips to fuel certain features in the forthcoming iOS 18.
M2 Ultra chips are set to drive some of the most advanced AI tasks slated for the present and future. Allegedly, Apple expedited its server construction initiatives in response to the rising demand for AI technologies like ChatGPT. Future server iterations might integrate the next-gen M4 chips.
While certain tasks will be executed on devices, more resource-intensive activities such as image generation and article summarization will necessitate cloud connectivity. Enhanced versions of Siri would similarly depend on cloud-based servers. Privacy has always been a priority for Apple, and the server team assures that Apple chips will inherently safeguard user privacy.
Initially, Gurman suggested that all upcoming features in iOS 18 would be on-device; however, it appears that certain functionalities slated for release this year will indeed utilize cloud servers. Apple intends to rely on its own servers for the time being but may consider incorporating servers from external providers in the future.
