New AirPods set for fall 2024 lineup

Apple is expected to update its regular AirPods lineup as early as next month, replacing the current second-gen AirPods. According to Bloomberg, Apple will introduce two versions of the fourth-gen AirPods: a budget-friendly model with basic features and a pricier version with active noise cancellation, possibly replacing the third-gen AirPods. The designs may also change to make these models more distinct.

Currently, the basic AirPods 2 are priced at $129 but often go on sale, while the AirPods 3, which look similar to the AirPods Pro but lack noise cancellation, are priced at $179.

One reason for the update is likely to switch the charging cases to USB-C instead of the Lightning connector. The mid-tier AirPods 4 may also come with wireless charging.

The company is also developing new firmware for the AirPods Pro, adding head gesture controls and improved noise isolation. These features might also appear in the new mid-tier fourth-gen AirPods.

Apple is expected to include Spatial Audio in both updated models, along with Apple Watch charging using the case’s built-in battery, as seen in the AirPods 3. The AirPods 2 will be discontinued, while the AirPods 3 may continue to be sold at a lower price for a while.

This new report aligns with earlier rumors about an AirPods update. It’s still uncertain if Apple will release a third generation of the AirPods Pro, though a firmware update with better voice isolation is expected.

The new AirPods models will likely be announced at an event next month, along with new iPhone, iPad, and Mac models. Stay tuned to Applenow.io for full coverage of Apple’s September 2024 event.
