The iPhone 16 event is anticipated to unveil the AirPods 4, featuring a built-in speaker and enhanced audio quality

Apple is expected to introduce two new models of AirPods 4 at the iPhone 16 event, both featuring USB-C and improved audio, with one model including a speaker in the charging case. Since March 2024, Apple has reportedly been mass-producing a replacement for the current AirPods 3, with a new model initially expected to debut alongside the iPhone 16. However, Bloomberg reports that Apple will now launch two versions of the AirPods 4.

These new models will replace both the AirPods 3 and the older AirPods 2, which Apple still sells. Both versions are expected to resemble the current AirPods Pro, offering enhanced audio and USB-C charging cases. The higher-end version will feature a built-in case speaker to aid in locating it via Find My and will also include noise cancellation on par with the current AirPods Pro.

Apple has reportedly identified and fixed an issue with the new AirPods that caused rapid battery drain. This resolution should not impact the scheduled launch at the September 9 event.

However, Apple’s hearing health features, codenamed Yodel, are said to be delayed. These features would turn AirPods into hearing aids and include hearing test capabilities. While it’s possible Yodel will be announced at the iPhone 16 event, development delays suggest it may debut at a later time.

Apple is also working on an updated AirPods Pro with a new design and improved noise cancellation, expected for release in early 2025. Additionally, an AirPods Max update is in development, likely to feature a USB-C connector and possibly new color options, though the release date is uncertain.

Along with the iPhone 16, Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event is expected to showcase the AirPods and Apple Watch.
