DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is a critical state for iPhones and iPads that allows for deep system restorations. It’s helpful for resolving software issues that prevent a normal boot or update. Here’s how to enter DFU mode on both iPhones and iPads, considering models with and without a Home button:
On iPhones and iPads with a Home Button:
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable. Make sure your computer has the latest version of iTunes installed (for older devices) or Finder open (for newer devices).
- Power off your device completely. Hold the Sleep/Wake button (usually on the top or side) until the “slide to power off” slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off the device.
- Enter the button combination:
- Press and hold the Home button simultaneously.
- While holding the Home button, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button (on the top for iPhones, side for iPads).
- Keep holding both buttons for exactly 10 seconds. Don’t release either button yet.
- After 10 seconds, release the Sleep/Wake button only. Continue holding the Home button for 5 more seconds.
- Your device’s screen should stay black. If it shows the Apple logo, you held the Sleep/Wake button for too long. Repeat from step 2.
- On your computer, iTunes or Finder should display a message indicating the device is detected in recovery mode. This actually signifies DFU mode.
On iPhones and iPads without a Home Button (iPhone X and later, iPad Pro models):
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- Perform a rapid button press sequence:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Immediately press and hold the Side/Top button.
- Keep holding the Side/Top button even after the Apple logo appears.
- After about 5 seconds, the screen will turn black. This indicates DFU mode.
- On your computer, iTunes or Finder should display a message indicating the device is detected in recovery mode (which signifies DFU mode).
Important Notes:
- Timing is crucial. If you don’t release the buttons at the right moments, you might enter recovery mode instead of DFU mode.
- If you have any trouble, consult Apple’s official support website for detailed instructions specific to your device model If you can't update or restore your iPad - Apple Support.
- DFU mode is a powerful tool, but it should only be used as a last resort after trying other troubleshooting methods. Restoring your device from DFU mode will erase all data, so ensure you have a recent backup.
