Entering DFU Mode on iPhone and iPad: A Comprehensive Guide

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is a critical state for iPhones and iPads that allows for deep system restorations. It’s helpful for resolving software issues that prevent a normal boot or update. Here’s how to enter DFU mode on both iPhones and iPads, considering models with and without a Home button:

On iPhones and iPads with a Home Button:

  1. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable. Make sure your computer has the latest version of iTunes installed (for older devices) or Finder open (for newer devices).
  2. Power off your device completely. Hold the Sleep/Wake button (usually on the top or side) until the “slide to power off” slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off the device.
  3. Enter the button combination:
  • Press and hold the Home button simultaneously.
  • While holding the Home button, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button (on the top for iPhones, side for iPads).
  1. Keep holding both buttons for exactly 10 seconds. Don’t release either button yet.
  2. After 10 seconds, release the Sleep/Wake button only. Continue holding the Home button for 5 more seconds.
  3. Your device’s screen should stay black. If it shows the Apple logo, you held the Sleep/Wake button for too long. Repeat from step 2.
  4. On your computer, iTunes or Finder should display a message indicating the device is detected in recovery mode. This actually signifies DFU mode.

On iPhones and iPads without a Home Button (iPhone X and later, iPad Pro models):

  1. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. Perform a rapid button press sequence:
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  • Immediately press and hold the Side/Top button.
  1. Keep holding the Side/Top button even after the Apple logo appears.
  2. After about 5 seconds, the screen will turn black. This indicates DFU mode.
  3. On your computer, iTunes or Finder should display a message indicating the device is detected in recovery mode (which signifies DFU mode).

Important Notes:

  • Timing is crucial. If you don’t release the buttons at the right moments, you might enter recovery mode instead of DFU mode.
  • If you have any trouble, consult Apple’s official support website for detailed instructions specific to your device model If you can't update or restore your iPad - Apple Support.
  • DFU mode is a powerful tool, but it should only be used as a last resort after trying other troubleshooting methods. Restoring your device from DFU mode will erase all data, so ensure you have a recent backup.
