iOS 18.1 Unveils Apple Intelligence – The Next Era of iPhones

Apple is set to release iOS 18.1 on Monday, October 28, introducing the first wave of Apple Intelligence features to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models. This update represents a major advance in Apple’s AI integration, delivering a new, contextually aware Siri experience along with a suite of additional features powered by on-device machine learning and large language models. Several new controls and non-AI features are also included in this release.

Although not all Apple Intelligence features will be available right away, iOS 18.1 brings several improvements designed to make your iPhone smarter and more intuitive. Here are 18 new capabilities your ‌iPhone‌ will have once the update launches later this month.

Reset Your Control Center

In iOS 18, Apple introduced extensive customization options for the Control Center, but there was no way to undo changes if it became cluttered. With iOS 18.1, however, you can easily reset it. Simply go to Settings ➝ Control Center, where a new option allows you to restore the Control Center to its default layout. This feature is ideal for anyone who wants a fresh start after making numerous adjustments, without needing to rearrange everything manually.

More Control Center Buttons

Apple has added new individual toggles for Satellite and AirDrop in the Control Center, enabling users to include them as separate buttons in their configurations for the first time. Previously, these features were only accessible through the unified Connectivity control.

Take Selfies With Camera Control

The Camera Control receives a selfie-friendly upgrade in iOS 18.1. Now, you can switch to the front-facing camera hands-free. Just open the Camera app by pressing the Camera Control button, then swipe on the button to scroll through lens options. To activate the selfie camera, look for the person icon at the top—making it simpler than ever to capture the perfect self-portrait.

Share ‌Apple Music‌ Songs on TikTok

Apple Music now includes a feature to share songs directly to TikTok. To use it, simply tap “Share Song” and select TikTok from the app list.

Sleep Apnea Detection

iOS 18.1 introduces sleep apnea detection and breathing disturbance readings for Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. After updating, you can activate sleep apnea alerts in the Health app by searching for “Breathing Disturbances.” Notifications will start only after the watch has collected at least 10 days of data, with analysis running every 30 days. Keep in mind that data collection for sleep apnea and breathing disturbances will begin only once the update is installed and alerts are enabled.

Proofread Your Text

Say goodbye to embarrassing typos with iOS 18.1’s new Writing Tools feature, which introduces a robust proofreading function. This tool not only catches spelling and grammar errors but also offers suggestions for enhanced word choice and sentence structure. You can choose to accept all recommendations with a single tap or review them individually, with explanations provided for each suggestion.

Rewrite Your Text

Looking to adjust the tone of your message? The new Rewrite tool can do just that. Whether you want your text to sound friendlier, more professional, or concise, this feature can refine your writing style without changing the core message. It’s like having a personal editor on hand, helping you communicate more effectively in any situation.

Summarize Long Emails

For those often overwhelmed by their inbox, this new feature is a game-changer. When a long email arrives, you’ll now see a “Summarize” button, allowing Apple Intelligence to generate a concise overview. You can opt for a brief paragraph, key points, or even a bulleted list, making it simpler to quickly understand essential information without reading every detail. Additionally, your inbox now shows a short AI-generated summary rather than the first few lines of each email, helping you prioritize responses more effectively.

Answer Apple Product Questions

With iOS 18.1, your ‌iPhone‌ becomes your personal Apple expert. ‌Siri‌ now has access to a vast product knowledge base, allowing it to help you explore device features, find specific settings, and even guide you through tasks with tutorials. It’s like having Apple Support right on your device, ready to assist whenever you need it.

Offer Smart Replies to Emails and Messages

iOS 18.1 enhances communication with the new Smart Reply feature. When you receive an email or message, your ‌iPhone‌ analyzes the content and offers contextually relevant response suggestions. These quick-tap options make it effortless to reply promptly and appropriately, streamlining your daily correspondence and saving time.

Summarize Multiple Message Notifications

Keeping up with group chats just got simpler. With iOS 18.1, multiple message notifications on your Lock Screen can now be summarized, providing a quick overview without needing to open the app. This feature helps you stay updated on conversations without being overwhelmed by too many notifications.

Create Memory Movies From a Short Description

Rediscover cherished moments effortlessly with the new Memory Movie feature. Just provide a description, such as “My cat in 2024” or “Orlando in the summer,” and your ‌iPhone‌ will automatically gather relevant photos and set them to fitting music. You can also customize the mood and add specific scenes, transforming your memories into beautifully crafted short films with ease.

Remove Unwanted Objects From Photos

Enhance your photos effortlessly with the new Clean Up tool. This feature lets you quickly remove unwanted objects from your images—whether it’s a photobomber or a distracting background element. Simply tap, circle, or brush over the object to make it vanish. The tool is designed to preserve essential elements, keeping your main subjects perfectly intact.

Summarize Your Audio Transcripts

Easily transform lengthy recordings into manageable content with the new transcription feature. When recording audio in apps like Notes, your ‌iPhone‌ now provides a transcript alongside a summary. This feature is especially useful for capturing and summarizing information from lectures, meetings, or interviews, making it simpler to review and share essential points.

Reduce Your Interruptions

Gain better control over your notifications with the new Reduce Interruptions Focus Mode. This smart feature filters your alerts to display only the most essential notifications that need your immediate attention. It’s perfect for times when you need to stay focused but don’t want to miss any critical updates.

Record Your Phone Calls

iOS 18.1 introduces call recording functionality. During a call, a record button appears in the upper left corner—simply tap it to start recording after notifying all participants. Recordings are saved in the Notes app, where you can also access transcripts and AI-generated summaries, making it convenient to review essential conversations.

Summarize Web Articles

Reading lengthy articles just got simpler with a new Safari upgrade. In Reader Mode, you can now tap a button to have Apple Intelligence generate a summary of the article. This feature quickly highlights the main points, helping you understand the core content without needing to read every word.

Generate Apple Intelligence Reports

For those interested in how Apple Intelligence functions on their device, iOS 18.1 introduces the Apple Intelligence Report. Located in the Privacy & Security section of the Settings app, this feature allows you to export your Apple Intelligence data. With Face ID authentication required, your privacy remains secure while giving you insight into how AI is enhancing your ‌iPhone‌ experience.
