iOS 18 Enables Third-Party Spatial Video Recording on iPhone 15 Pro

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models running iOS 17.2 or later can record spatial video with 3D depth for playback on Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Previously, this feature was exclusive to Apple’s built-in Camera app, but starting with iOS 18, third-party camera apps on the App Store can also offer spatial video recording.

During a WWDC 2024 coding session last week, Apple announced a new API that allows developers to add spatial video recording to any app. Apple noted that this API is integrated into existing camera-related frameworks, simplifying implementation.

In landscape orientation, the iPhone 15 Pro’s main and ultra-wide cameras combine to record spatial video. It’s expected that this feature will extend to the iPhone 16 Pro models and potentially to the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which are rumored to have vertically aligned rear cameras.

To experience the added depth in spatial videos, you’ll need a Vision Pro, as these videos appear in standard 2D format on an iPhone.

iOS 18, currently in beta, is expected to be released in September.
