This week, Apple previewed a new system for iPhone users updating to iOS 18, allowing them to use Apple Pay in any desktop web browser, including Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, even on Windows PCs.

Websites that adopt the latest version of Apple Pay will support this new system. When a customer checks out with Apple Pay using a desktop browser other than Safari, a code will appear on the screen. This code can be scanned with the Camera app on an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, enabling the purchase to be completed on the iPhone.
In a WWDC 2024 coding session released today, Apple provided more details about this system. Since it will take time for website developers to adopt the latest Apple Pay SDK, the feature won’t be widely available on the web immediately.
Previously, Apple Pay on the desktop web was limited to Safari on a Mac, so this expansion to more browsers and devices is highly anticipated.
iOS 18 is currently in beta and is expected to be widely released in September.
