iOS 18 to leverage AI for summarizing notifications, calendar integration, and more

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is on the verge of revealing an auto-summarization feature for notifications as a component of a suite of new artificial intelligence features in iOS 18.

In his “Power On” newsletter today, Gurman elaborated on Apple’s forthcoming debut in generative AI at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference. Among the updates, the company will enhance Siri’s vocal abilities for a more conversational experience and introduce functionalities aimed at assisting users in their daily routines, a strategy referred to as “proactive intelligence.”

This encompasses services such as automatically summarizing notifications from your iPhone, providing brief overviews of news articles, transcribing voice memos, and enhancing existing features like calendar auto-population and app suggestions. Additionally, there will be AI-driven editing enhancements for photos, although these may not impress users familiar with AI features in Adobe Inc.'s apps over recent months.

Gurman mentioned that while Apple will primarily rely on on-device processing for its AI features, it will also utilize cloud-based delivery from data centers housing high-end Apple silicon chips tailored for the Mac. Notably, Gurman pointed out the absence of a ChatGPT-like chatbot from Apple’s upcoming AI features, with Apple executives reportedly acknowledging their internal need to catch up in this regard.

Apple’s initial foray into AI is widely anticipated to be unveiled alongside previews of its next-generation software updates at WWDC, commencing on June 10th.
