Apple plans to update the MacBook Pro with M4 chips by late 2024, and this guide compiles all we know about Apple’s M4 MacBook Pro intentions.
M4 Update
Apple developed the M3 chip using a 3-nanometer process, and we anticipate the M4 will also utilize this technology. However, TSMC, Apple’s chip supplier, might introduce enhancements for better efficiency and speed.
Rumors suggest new AI capabilities for Apple’s upcoming devices, with the M4 focusing on AI performance. Apple aims to boost AI functionality, potentially upgrading the Neural Engine in the M4 (and A18 chips for iPhone) with “significantly” more cores. The current M3 chips feature a 16-core Neural Engine, a number unchanged for several years.
Entry-Level 14-Inch MacBook Pro
Following last year’s M3 chip release, Apple phased out the 13-inch MacBook Pro in favor of the 14-inch model, offering three chip options. Priced at $1,599, the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro currently features an M3 chip. This model is expected to transition to the standard M4 chip. The existing M3 chip boasts an 8-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU, with the M4 likely offering similar specs.
Higher-End 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro Models
For those seeking a more powerful option, the higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will likely be equipped with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, enhanced versions of the standard M4 chip. The M3 Pro currently features up to a 12-core CPU and an 18-core GPU, while the M3 Max offers up to a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. Details on the M4 Pro and M4 Max CPU and GPU improvements are yet to be revealed.
Design Changes?
No design changes are rumored for the MacBook Pro, which isn’t surprising given the 2021 transition to Apple silicon. Apple typically redesigns the MacBook every few years, with the last updates in 2012, 2016, and 2021. If this pattern holds, we might expect the next design update around 2025 or 2026. This year’s M-series update is likely to focus on internal improvements.
Launch Date
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro may feature an M4 chip by late 2024, while the higher-end models could be refreshed from late 2024 to early 2025. The M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max could either launch simultaneously, as seen with the M3 lineup, or be staggered releases.
Given the M3 MacBook Pro release in October 2023, an October 2024 update would align with the one-year refresh cycle.
