According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s new Mac mini design won’t include any USB-A ports.
The current Mac mini with the M2 chip has two USB-C and two USB-A ports, while the M2 Pro version has four USB-C and two USB-A ports. In his latest “Power On” newsletter, Gurman explained that the upcoming Mac mini with the M4 Pro chip will have five USB-C ports but no USB-A ports. Three USB-C ports will be on the back, and two will be on the front, similar to the Mac Studio. The device will still have ethernet, HDMI, and 3.5mm audio ports, and the power supply will stay internal.
Last month, Gurman reported that the next Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro chips will get its first major design change since 2010. The new Mac mini might be about the size of an Apple TV but slightly taller than the current model, which is 1.4 inches high. It will still have an aluminum shell. People working on it say it’s like “an iPad Pro in a small box.”
Gurman says that suppliers in China will start shipping the new Mac mini models with the M4 chip in early September, while the M4 Pro version won’t ship until October. The M4 generation will be the first time Apple uses the same chip across all its Macs, with updates for the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro planned over the next year.
