Several rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 models will have a new button, making it easier to take photos when holding the phone in landscape mode.
Apple is reportedly working on a new “Capture Button” for the iPhone 16, which will be one of the most advanced buttons introduced so far. This button will support multiple gestures and respond to pressure. Here’s what it might do:
- Lightly press to autofocus while taking a photo or video.
- Press harder to snap a picture.
- Swipe left or right to zoom in and out.
- A gesture might also let you switch between photo and video mode, similar to how the iPhone camera app currently works.
The light press to autofocus will be familiar to DSLR camera users, as it’s a common feature on high-end cameras.
Apple plans to place this button on the right side of the iPhone, where the mmWave antenna is currently located on U.S. models. The antenna will be moved to the left side to make room.
While the Capture Button has been shown in renders and dummy models of all four iPhone 16 devices, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioned that it might only be available on the Pro models.
With the Capture Button, Apple aims to encourage users to capture photos and videos in landscape mode, which is better suited for viewing on the Vision Pro headset.
In addition to the Capture Button, the iPhone 16 models will have slightly larger displays, a new A18 chip with Apple Intelligence support, and 8GB of RAM across all models, which is essential for powering Apple’s AI features. For more details, be sure to check out our iPhone 16 roundup.
